The General

8 01 2010

The silent film, I fear, is slowly becoming more and more pushed from the public eye. This is tragic, indeed, because so many silent films are freaking fantastic. One example is The General(#18). Starring the ever stoic Buster Keaton, The General chronicles the story of Johnny Grey and his quest to find his locomotive named General and winning the heart of his beloved Annabelle.

I’ve gotta say, I absolutely loved The General. I know it’s difficult to really get into silent films in this day and age, but once you do they’re absolutely fabulous. Their subtle physical humor is something you just don’t find in current comedies. I know I was laughing out loud while watching this movie. Buster’s clown, ever expressionless, is absolutely enthralling. Despite the insane situations he gets in to, he always has a blank face. It’s ridiculous and unrealistic, but it makes the movie very humorous. This movie definitely deserves its place on the list.
